Abeokuta South Local Government was created in 1976 during the local government reforms of the Murtala/Obasanjo regime. It was carved out of the former Abeokuta Local Government to bring governance closer to the people.
The name "Abeokuta" means "Under the Rock" in the Yoruba language, derived from the city's location beneath the famous Olumo Rock, which served as a natural fortress during inter-tribal wars in the 19th century.
The local government area has played a significant role in the political and economic development of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole, being the birthplace of several notable Nigerians including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of Nigeria.
